Maj (Ret) Dennis Anthony Strilchuk, CD
(1956-2017)
Dennis always held high the importance of helping others.
Dennis graduated from O'Leary High School and joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 18. He was commissioned in the Canadian Army and served with the First and Third Regiments, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (Shilo, Manitoba and Lahr, West Germany) and in many bases across Canada including Army headquarters in Montreal, National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa, the Combat Training Centre and the Royal Canadian School of Artillery at Gagetown, NB, and as a United Nations Military observer in the Gaza Strip, Angola and Mozambique. He then returned to Edmonton where he was the second in command of the 20th Field regiment Royal Canadian Artillery.
After retirement in 2006, he attended Grant MacEwan Community College where he graduated with a diploma as a Registered Social Worker. He was subsequently employed as a civilian counselor at the Canadian Forces Base where he provided counselling for service people suffering from PTSD and addictions problems until his own health issues necessitated his medical retirement.
Dennis passed on April 10, 2017, at Capital Care Lynnwood, Edmonton after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his parents, Dennis Sr. and Rebecca; brother, Terry; nephew, Michael; and stepnieces, Patricia and Katrina. He will be missed by many uncles, aunts and numerous cousins as well as his two special military friends, Mike and Tom.
Upon his passing, Dennis left a meaningful and lasting gift, bequeathing part of his estate to continue helping those who needed it most, including the Military Family Fund and Valour Place.
We are forever grateful for his support. May his memory be eternal.
